Hair Restoration for Men

Very few people are aware of the fact that every man’s hair is as unique as a fingerprint. This ranges from the curl, color and pattern of your hair line to the contrast between your scalp and hair. No two men have the same head of hair! This is exactly why Dr. Robert Reese and Dr. Chahira Issolah provide their male patients with individualized and custom made hair loss treatments and strategies to meet their expectations, goals and needs.

Hair Transplant Repair – "Corrective" Procedures

Hair restoration techniques have come a long way. Many of the past techniques produced outcomes that were not aesthetically appealing. By using new state-of-the-art procedures such as the SmartGraft technology, Dr. Robert Reese can significantly improve the appearance for patients who have had previous hair transplants.

Using the latest techniques at Reese Hair we perform hair transplant repair to help our patients achieve a softer, more natural-looking head of hair. If you are unsatisfied with the results of a prior hair transplant, contact us today for a free consultation.

As a first step to the treatment, our doctors will draw up a unique treatment plan. This is done with an evaluation of the “four Cs”:

  • Caliber of hair
  • Curl of hair
  • Color contrast between scalp and hair
  • Characteristics of hair loss pattern and facial structure.

Reese Hair Restoration offers women a wide range of surgical hair loss solutions. Dr. Robert Reese has years of experience. He developed the skill, precision and artistry needed to recreate your natural hairline.

Dr. Reese pays special attention when developing the angulations, dissection and placement of each follicle to make sure patients get the best of density and natural looks. The types of surgical hair loss treatments we provide are as listed below.

Donor Harvesting Techniques

Three different techniques exist:

  • Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)
  • Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
  • Combination of FUT and FUE

A patient may have a preference for one type of donor harvesting technique over the other, but the final choice can only be determined after a physical exam is performed by Dr. Reese.

Each donor harvesting technique has certain advantages and disadvantages outlined below.

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)

  • The is the traditional method of donor harvesting.
  • It is also known as the “strip” method.
  • A strip of donor scalp is removed from the back of your scalp and closed with a suture that is removed about 10 days post-procedure.
  • The follicles contained in the strip are individually removed by skilled technicians using magnification which is why follicle transection (injury) rates are so low using this technique (typically less than 1%).

FUT advantages

  • Most cost effective method of hair restoration.
  • Always moves the most amount of hair for the patient.
  • Always performed as a one day treatment session.
  • Immediately undetectable because the overlying hair covers the suture line

FUT disadvantages

  • Creates a linear scar—but typically only 1 to 2mm wide.
  • More discomfort compared to the FUE technique.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

FUE is a minimally-invasive technique where follicles in the donor zone are harvested INDIVIDUALLY over a large area of the donor zone.

FUE advantages

  • Minimally invasive technique compared to FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation).
  • No linear scar.
  • Optimal technique for those who prefer a short hairstyle
  • Minimal post-procedure discomfort.
  • Allows the doctor to choose the follicles to transplant that are most appropriate for the patient’s procedure; 1, 2, 3 or 4 hair follicles.

FUE disadvantages

  • Longer harvesting times (performed over 1-2 days).
  • Increased rates of injury to the follicle compared to the FUT technique with transection rates typically in the 3% to 7% range.
  • May require the donor hair to be cut very short for the procedure.

WHY choose SmartGraft® FUE

Dr. Reese has seen and/or used every FUE device ever invented. SmartGraft® is the fastest, most technically-advanced, most accurate and most follicle protecting FUE device ever invented.

Most FUE devices only score the scalp leaving the follicle in place which must be manually extracted; it is this manual extraction component (pulling) where injury to the follicle occurs.

After scoring the scalp, the SmartGraft® advanced technology suction-extracts the follicles without manually pulling on them. It is the manual pulling action that leads to so much injury in the follicles using traditional FUE equipment. The extracted follicles are then stored in a moist, chilled environment to avoid dehydration of the extracted follicles. Other FUE devices do not provide this added benefit.

Currently Reese Hair Restoration is the only practice in the Twin Cities to have the SmartGraft® technology.

Combination of FUT and FUE

All hair transplant surgeons are challenged with the concept of large demand zones (where the hair is needed), versus smaller supply zones (where hair is removed from).

Most patients have a “mismatch” with large area demand zones, compared to smaller area supply zones.

For patients that have experienced significant hair loss that would require very large hair transplant procedures, the combination of the FUT and FUE techniques are ideal to obtain the maximum number of follicles available to transplant in a single day treatment session.
